Lowland Tapirs | Insects |

At this time studies of fauna in the Andes-Amazon region of southeastern Peru involve the continuation of Mathias Tobler’s lowland neotropical tapir project, as well as Renan Valega’s inventory and monitoring of bird diversity.

Mathias Tobler is currently in Switzerland, his native country, where he has finished his dissertation that details the results of his intensive three year study of the lowland tapir in the Peruvian Amazon, with focus on Madre de Dios, Peru. During the beginning of 2008, there were still five tapirs in the Amazonian forests with GPS collars on their necks recording another series of distribution points for documenting and understanding tapir movement patterns and habitat use. In February 2008, these collars were collected by Ethan Householder and the BRIT field team based in the region. The GPS units were then sent to NavSys were the information was retrieved and is currently being analyzed by Tobler.

Renan Valega will continue his inventory and monitoring of bird diversity in the Andes-Amazon region starting in February 2008. His work will be integrated with expeditions of Janovec and the BRIT botany team. Please stay tuned for more information and images of the bird diversity from this region.
