Mathias Tobler is research scientist from Switzerland who serves as one of the Co-PIs of the Andes to Amazon Biodiversity Program. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis on the ecology of the lowland tapir in Madre de Dios and graduated from Texa A&M University in May 2008. His specialities are landscape and wildlife ecology, computer technology, GIS, remote sensing, spatial and ecological data analysis. He has done research in Switzerland, Costa Rica, Tanzania, and Peru. He spends most of his time working in the Peru.

The focus of his research and studies is wildlife ecology, with an emphasis on the ecology of the lowland tapirs. During the last years he led the AABP tapir project, put GPS collars on 11 tapirs to study their movement patterns and habitat use, and analized their diet and behavior. He led multiple camera trap surveys carried out in the region in collaboration with WWF. He is also managing most of AABP's GIS data, helps with the development of Atrium and provides support to AABP researchers with data analysis.
