Peru Projects Home | Lima | Quince Mil | Puerto Maldonado
The nursery in Puerto Maldonado is managed by Jason Wells, who works closely with Janovec and Renan Valega to coordinate ongoing horticultural, agricultural, and forestry activities.A similar nursery is being built in Quince Mil.Plants are propagated from seeds and cuttings in beds of growing medium, such as pictured here. They are then transplanted to pots or directly to the ground in the various shade houses and growing areas of the nursery. There are about 400 native plant species in the nursery.
The BRIT nursery in Puerto Maldonado is managed in collaboration with Boris Zlatar, a local community member of Puerto Maldonado.Numerous shade houses, such as the one pictured here, have been built on site. The most recent project involves the construction of an innovative greenhouse for the production of organic vegetables. The first experiment being carried out focuses on seven varieties of tomatoes.Construction of a Vanilla plantation has already begun and hopes to be completed by May 2008.
One of the most recent projects to receive funding focuses on the diversity, sustainable use, and conservation of Vanilla orchids and their wetland habitats of the Peruvian Amazon.Seven Vanilla species, including the non-native Vanilla planifolia of commerce are being propagated and grown in an experimental plantation setting.Various cultivation strategies are being used. Here Vanilla is growing on single poles and fence-like structures in the nursery of Puerto Maldonado.Vanilla plants are also being transplanted to local farms.
